Every girl dreams of the day when that special young man will propose, and she will be able to wear a diamond engagement ring on her left hand. There are many different styles and designs of rings, but solitaire engagement rings are one of the all-time favorites.

A popular way to purchase an engagement ring nowadays is to design your own ring. You can do this at a local jewelry shop or online. Either place will have a large assortment of rings with different settings.

The first decision you will need to make is what kind of metal you want. Most engagement rings are made from yellow or white gold. Others are made from platinum, but it is considerably more expensive. Anyone who has an allergy to gold, can wear platinum.

You may choose a simple setting that has just a single solitaire diamond. These settings put all of the emphasis on the diamond, and there is nothing to detract from its beauty. They are the easiest of all rings to design.

There are settings with a solitaire in the center and a smaller diamond on each side. Other settings have the solitaire in the center and four tiny diamonds inset into the band itself on each side of the main diamond. Other rings have smaller diamonds that accompany the solitaire plus elegant designs in the metal itself.

The next step is to choose the kind of diamond you want. For this, you will need to learn about the 4 Cs. These will determine the quality and the price of the diamond. The Cut simply refers to the way the diamond is cut and how many facets it has. This determines the way it reflects the light, resulting in how much it shines.

The carat is the actual size of the diamond. Clarity is how clear the diamond is. More opaque diamonds cost less because they aren't as fine. Color is the last C. Diamonds come in a variety of colors and the clearer they are, the more expensive they will be.

The final thing you will need to choose is the shape of the solitaire. There are a variety of shapes you can choose from. You can choose from shapes like round, oval or cushion, which is a small, wider rectangle with the corners rounded. Princess, Asscher and Radiant are all variants of a square shape. Emerald is a rectangle, and Marquise is a diamond with the two center points somewhat rounded. The pear and heart are more novelty shapes in diamonds.

Designing your own diamond engagement ring is an experience you will never forget. As you do it together, you'll be building a memory that will last a lifetime. It will hold more meaning for both of you than any other ring you could buy.
